Ahead of its Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple is expected to showcase new features in iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence, which will debut with the iPhone 18 Pro. Even if the iPhone Pro costs the same, customers should be prepared to pay more for the lifetime of their new phone.
Economic pressure on the iPhone 18 Pro
During the initial iPhone 18 Pro lifecycle, Apple must absorb the component purchase costs in the device before passing on the infrastructure premiums to users..
Reduced supply and increased demand for memory and storage continue to impact the consumer electronics industry. In one of the most high-profile cases last month, Valve raised the price of the Steam Tech portable gaming console by more than forty% to cover increased production costs. Additional demands on these basic specifications of artificial intelligence will see a combination of lower manufacturer margins and higher consumer prices.
Apple is expected to keep the iPhone 18 Pro at the same price as the iPhone 17 Pro at $1,099. As the public buys the new model, Apple uses its high iPhone margins to absorb the increased cost of goods to ensure the smartphone is a ‘day zero win’.
Apple Intelligence and the wider adoption of more complex generative AI will offload some tasks to the cloud. Its private cloud computing protects user anonymity, but server costs are rising on AI platforms. Apple must run at a loss during a launch window, but recoup that cost over the lifetime of a device.
Apple signs deal with Google to bring AI to iPhone 18 Pro
Update, Sunday June 7.
Writing for the Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman explains how far behind Apple is in implementing artificial intelligence tools. Tim Cook won’t address Apple’s structural issues surrounding AI until an executive meeting in March 2025, the same period that Google built Gemini and integrated AI into Android’s core.
Essentially, Apple has decided against relying entirely on an in-house solution. Instead, according to Gurman’s statement, it has asked Google for support:
“Rockwell, along with Federighi and Cue, were able to strike a deal with Google to replace the base models and cloud computing systems that power Siri with Gemini and Google Cloud technology. This came after an investigation into using third-party solutions.
It doesn’t come for free and is another cost of carrying Apple Books. This has implications for consumers because Apple doesn’t want to subsidize sending its customers to Google.

Cost of software paywalls on iPhone 18 Pro
Consumers expect premium access to software features to justify the higher retail price of premium smartphones.
Consumer resistance to additional service charges after purchasing a smartphone is increasing. This secondary toll-gate unlocks all the advertised features on the device, changing the relationship between the manufacturer and the owner. When long-term adoption and continued revenue are the goal, any dissatisfaction immediately after the unboxing experience threatens the implied relationship between the parties.
The total cost of owning a smartphone is hidden at many points in the chain. The sticker shock of a premium price is masked by multi-year carrier contracts that absorb the cost into a monthly subscription, reducing or eliminating any upfront costs.
Existing subscription services, such as Apple One, offer a free introductory trial before switching to monthly billing. This moves the initial charging point from unboxing. Apple One also bundles several services, blurring the lines between Apple Music, Apple TV, iCloud storage and more. Expect Apple Intelligence Services to be packaged in a similar fashion.
Competing ecosystems force subscription balance
Google and Samsung are defining the competitive landscape by balancing subsidized core software services against specialized paid developments.
Google’s Gemini and Samsung’s Galaxy AI have leaned on extended advertising windows, leading to relative increases in market share. Consumer expectations prevent Apple from implementing instant payments without risking its premium users considering an alternative platform.
Monetization AI will follow a similar path to other online services now being adopted. Cloud storage started out as a small but free framework before becoming an essential part of the smartphone suite as data caps were reached.
The market is approaching a similar inflection point in premium AI tiers, at which point Apple and others will ramp up their subscription efforts to lock in customers and drive long-term value.
The rising total cost of iPhone ownership
It’s not a given that Apple can keep the iPhone 18 Pro price at $1099; Circumstances could be wildly different on the September release date, but it’s fair to assume it could. It’s also reasonable to assume that Apple will cover its AI costs through monthly surcharges.
It will be rolled into the Apple One, which will hide the true cost of the Apple intelligence behind the trial period and sticky subscriptions to Apple Music and Apple TV. Adding a new service, if priced similarly to others, would cost consumers $15 per month to fully realize AI on their smartphones.
Apple may get a lower margin on the iPhone 18 Pro, giving an Apple One customer an extra $100 to $150 in revenue in the first year of ownership. It’s not visible in the Apple Store, but your iPhone will cost more in 2026.
