A Maine fire department is warning people to be cautious about what devices are plugged into their homes after a virtual reality headset exploded while charging in the bedroom.

The Frankfort Volunteer Fire Department said Thursday morning that a resident was charging the MetaQuest 3’s external battery on their nightstand when the VR headset exploded.

Firefighters said the explosion sparked a fire and sent pieces of the headset across the bedroom and a flaming piece down a 15-foot staircase about 14 feet from the bedroom.

Even though the owner of the house was outside when the explosion occurred, he heard the noise and rushed inside to extinguish the fire.

Winterport ambulance crews responded to evaluate the homeowner for smoke inhalation, the fire department said.

Members of the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the home to investigate the incident, while firefighters requested assistance from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to retrieve the damaged headset and batteries.
