Apple accelerates application development with new intelligent architectures and advanced tools
New APIs for integrating AI models and extended agent coding in Xcode 27 give developers powerful new ways to build and optimize their apps.
Cupertino, California Apple today introduced new Intelligence capabilities, expanded productivity features in Xcode, and platform improvements that make apps faster, more adaptive, and easier to build.
“Developers are at the heart of the Apple ecosystem, and our goal is to provide them with the best tools and technologies to build the future,” said Susan Prescott, vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations at Apple. “With new intelligent frameworks and agent code in Xcode 27, developers have the tools they need to focus on what they do best: bringing their incredible ideas to life.”
Intelligence Structures
With recent improvements to Apple Intelligence and the introduction of Siri AI, developers can make their apps’ content and capabilities more discoverable and accessible across the system. Updates to the App Intents framework help developers connect their apps with Siri AI capabilities, such as personal context understanding, app actions, and on-screen awareness.
New intelligence frameworks allow developers to more easily and flexibly build AI features into their apps, tapping into powerful models from Apple and others. With the Foundation Models framework introduced last year, developers gain new options for integrating AI into their applications. The framework now functions as a single native Swift API that supports more powerful device models with image input, support for server models, and the ability to create custom capabilities.
Using this API, developers can tap into next-generation Apple Foundation models, which are customized to work with Google and its Gemini models to deliver integrated experiences across Apple platforms. To ensure that building large language models is as accessible as possible for those getting started with AI, developers enrolled in the App Store Small Business Program with fewer than 2 million total first-time App Store downloads can access the next generation of Apple Foundation Models at no cost to the Cloud API. Developers can easily use models of their choice from Claude and Gemini or any other provider that implements the new language model protocol. To help developers create adaptive AI experiences more easily and flexibly, the framework also introduces capabilities like dynamic profiles, enabling developers to update how they interact with their apps on the fly.
For developers who want to bring their own custom models into their app, Core AI is a brand new framework designed to be the best way to run models on the device. Core AI provides an architecture optimized for Apple Silicon’s integrated memory and neural engine, allowing developers to deploy a full range of LLMs in-house.
Xcode 27 and Agent Coding
Xcode is a great place to develop for Apple platforms, and a great place to code with Agents. Xcode 27 takes the next big step in agent coding. This year’s release brings the full power of today’s best models and agents from Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI directly into a developer’s workflow. Conversations with coding agents include interactive scheduling, multiturn Q&A, and a canvas that can provide markdown and instantly display code changes and previews.
Xcode 27 also gives coding agents tools to validate their own work, so they can run autonomously longer.
With plugins, developers can extend Xcode with custom capabilities, bring the tools they use every day through the Model Environment protocol, and connect to any agent compatible with the Agent Client protocol. GitHub and Figma are the first to offer seamless installation between their tools and Xcode.
In addition to code intelligence, Xcode 27 offers improvements across the board. The app is now Apple Silicon only, 30 percent smaller, and offers faster performance and a simpler setup process. It’s more customizable than ever, with a fully customizable toolbar and a new theme system that spreads colors across the entire editor.
Xcode Cloud is now 2x faster, with new support for apps using Metal and visionOS builds, all powered by Apple Silicon.
Refined design and UI frameworks
Liquid Glass provides a unified visual design that makes apps more transparent and instantly familiar across Apple platforms. This year, it continues to evolve with improvements in design, clarity, customization and stability. A new transparency slider in Settings allows users to customize their viewing experience by adjusting the appearance to their liking, while the design seamlessly adapts to the various accessibility settings users can choose from.
SwiftUI is designed to handle the issues of layout, animation, and cross-platform integration so developers can focus on making their app stand out. This year, SwiftUI makes apps more responsive without requiring developers to modify their code with more efficient state initialization and faster layout rendering. Developers can now write less custom code using new reconfigurable containers, and a new Spatial Preview framework lets you spatially view 3D models from Mac apps while streaming in Apple Vision Pro.
Swift combines full-stack development with the speed, exposure, and memory security developers need to build everything from full-featured mobile apps and embedded firmware to platforms beyond the Apple ecosystem. It prioritizes usability and an intuitive syntax, allowing developers to easily iterate on their ideas, while catching compiler mistakes. Building on this foundation, Swift 6.4 is designed to make everyday tasks effortless. It streamlines the day-to-day developer experience by introducing target warning suppression, simplified availability attributes such as “anyAppleOS”, and improved compiler diagnostics.
Tools and resources for sports
For game and spatial developers, the new tools and resources will make it easier to bring high-quality titles to Apple platforms and provide seamless experiences for players.
- Managed background assets Reduce game installation size by introducing intelligent, localized distribution. The system now automatically recognizes a player’s preferred language and downloads only the specific asset packs needed for that language, returning to the closest match if necessary. Additionally, a new Steam Asset Converter streamlines the process of converting PC games to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and visionOS.
- Game Toolkit 4 Boarding Mac accelerates the development of games by introducing open source capabilities for use with agents, equipping them with Apple-specific best practices for Metal development and dramatically reducing the time it takes to bring games to Apple platforms.
- Official Unity plugins Bring native Apple integration to one of the most popular game engines. Developers now have access to Apple-provided plugins for StoreKit and background assets, allowing them to natively implement in-app purchases across all Apple platforms within their existing Unity workflow.
- Reality Composer Pro 3 Allows developers to create complete spatial experiences in one tool. With new Live Previews integrated with Mac Virtual Display, developers can now instantly see the results of their edits.
